About us
Since 1966
Chinthamaniyur and silk
Chinthamaniyur is in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, and silk work is a big part of life here. Handloom weaving is one of the oldest trades in the district, and the skill is handed down from one generation to the next.
A hundred years ago, weavers in Salem were making silk sarees with gold and silver thread, and merchants in the district sent sarees as far as Ceylon and Singapore. Salem Silk, also called Salem Venpattu, is a registered Geographical Indication today.
How we started
Kandaswamy was a farmer who learned the silk trade at a young age. In 1966 he started his own company. His wife, Mani Kandaswamy, still manages some of our loom operations to this day.
Today
The company is now managed by his son, Kannan Kandaswamy, and Kannan's wife, Punitha.
